Hello Old Friends!

Remember little old me?

I can't believe this is just my second time posting in 2017! The window for a new year's post has come and gone, as has the window for a SIX year blogoversary post, BUT, my wedding is still 24 days away, so I don't think I've missed the window for a wedding inspiration post.

First things first, though, I can't say I haven't missed this space: I've missed it dearly, but when planning my new year's post that never was, I decided 2017 was going to be a year of, dare I say, apathy? No...that's not quite right, how about imperfection? Acquiescence? Unapologetic-ness?

You see, I think a part of the reason I never wrote that post was because, I couldn't find the right word to embody my goal for the year. I really wanted to choose one definitive word to drive my year ahead, yet, every word I came up with had a negative connontation. Let me tease it out for you. These words that came to mind - apathy, imperfection, acquiescence, unapologetic-ness - what they meant to me for 2017 was being more carefree, less of a perfectionist, accepting my limits, and not feeling bad about it.

I've never been shy in sharing that I'm a perfectionist (in fact, I mentioned it in one of my very first blog posts here), and while I think being a perfectionist has it's positives, it's also just plain exhausting!

As I embarked upon 2017, I knew that I'd have to be willing to cut myself some slack to stay sane whilst planning a wedding in six months, and managing a new job, that has been a great "career" move, but not the best "life" move.

All that being said, I never intended to abandon the blog to the extent I did, but it's one of the many balls I've had to decide not to juggle these last several months. I do miss the creativity, therapy, and connections blogging brings, but am grateful that I've been able to be an "Instagram-blogger" during my absence here.

So, unapologetically, that's where I've been. I'm hoping to be back more soon, but make no promises. I have lots of blog posts in the "queue," but then again this post has been in the queue, 75% written, since January. Apathy, imperfection, acquiescence, unapologetic-ness.

So without further adieu, here's my wedding inspiration post. I'm not going to adjust it too much from it's original version in January, but have a huge grin now at just how much I've accomplished since then. Pat on my own back? Don't mind if I do!

As you know, our engagement has been just over 6 months. I initially worried I might be crazy for choosing to have a short engagement, but things have all come together quite perfectly, albeit quickly!

If any of you are considering a shorter engagement I say go for it...if you already know what you want. For me, let's be real, Bryce and I have been together nearly six years, so I've been planning my wedding for years! It's really been just a matter of getting my ducks in a row and bringing my vision to life.

To set the backdrop, I'll first share our venue, the venue I've dreamed of for years: Tuckahoe Plantation. Not only is it the boyhood home of Thomas Jefferson himself, but it's also less than 20 minutes outside the city of Richmond, and just minutes from where I grew up! As you can imagine, it books up far in advance, so when June 3 was available I felt like it was fate! The crepe myrtle lined ceremony site is utterly gorgeous and reason enough to get married there (see here). We will have our cocktail hour in their main gardens, followed by a tented reception in front of the house itself. I am so giddy with excitement just typing these plans I've anticipated for so long!

Now what is this wedding I've been planning for years, you ask?

Let me show you...

When describing my wedding to vendors, friends, etc, I have shared that I envision a classic Southern garden soiree, but with a modern, fresh, and somewhat whimsical spin! Y'all know when it comes to fashion and interior design, I'm classic and traditional...with a twist...and I envision no less for my wedding day itself. Our colors are lilac and green with black, white, and gold accents. Oysters are also a bit of a theme. 

When I first wrote this post, I initially had drafted a "nitty gritty" section where I dove into a more detailed description of the different elements, but now that the wedding is so near, I'd rather let the specifics remain a surprise. I will share, however, that much of the inspiration board you see above remains on point with our final plan.

Any guesses what elements from the board will, or will not, be a part of our big day on June 3?

The Proposal

I know it's been a while...more on that in my New Year's post coming soon...but I am happy to be sharing a bit more about Bryce's proposal and our engagement with you here on Alexandra Bee Blog today. I had originally planned to share some wedding inspiration with you, as well, but realized that needs to be separated into it's own post altogether!

Those of you who follow along with me on Insta have been itching for this post and I'm excited to finally get my act together!

It's a long one, so grab a cup of hot cocoa, or, a cocktail and settle in!

For those of you that have been longtime followers, you know Bryce and I have been together for quite awhile. Our first date was July 7, 2011, to be exact! That being said, I might have had a bit of an idea an engagement was coming soon...and at the very least can say that I was maybe just impatiently awaiting the 4 little words "Will you marry me?"

First things first, though, let's backtrack a little and talk about ring shopping!

I'll be the first to admit that I didn't initially think I wanted to be a part of the ring shopping experience. I'm so glad, however, that Bryce insisted I be included. It's so interesting trying on rings, and it's crazy how different the styles can look on your hand than in pictures online or on other people. I ended up with a ring that was completely different than I envisioned or even thought I wanted (similar to my wedding dress shopping experience, too!).

The first time we looked at rings, it was a rainy spring day and we started the day with brunch at Can Can, our first date spot. After brunch, we made our way to a local jewelry shop to peruse rings. I was certain I wanted a round, three stone ring (like this). I tried on multiple three stone styles, though, and nothing felt quite right. I was also certain that I did not want a ring with a halo. I found halos to be beautiful, but felt like they were the "in" ring. I wanted classic, not trendy. That being said, Bryce begged me to try on a specific round halo he saw. This one was a little different than the others, as the halo was quite delicate and the center stone was set as a pave sitting up above the halo. I still knew that it wouldn't be the ring, but decided to oblige him and try it on.

Y'all--I put the ring on and immediately knew. It was "the one!" Bryce knew all along, better than me, which ring would be perfect for my hand, for our engagement.

Quite a while passed, and Bryce went back to the original jewelry store and several others to look again and again. A little over a month before our engagement, he asked that I go with him a second time to look. He wanted to be sure that the ring I would look at the rest of my life was just right.

That weekend we went to one jewelry store he had not yet visited: Adolf Jewelers. (I'm putting in a plug here, because, local friends, Adolf's is the place to go! They were wonderful in every way!)

Our experience was so fun and we realized that yes, the first ring I chose was perfect. Adolf's then ordered diamonds for the setting we selected and we went back the following week to pick our diamond. I'll share here that I really didn't picture myself being quite so involved in the process, especially not choosing the diamond, but again, I  am so glad that I was. It was fun and exciting, not to mention, I received quite the diamond education from Mr. Adolf himself! After we selected the diamond, we were told it should take about 3 weeks for them to build my setting for the diamond and have the ring ready. The countdown was on!

It took a bit longer than first estimated, so I was in constant anticipation!

The night that Bryce proposed finally rolled around. It was November 22, two nights before Thanksgiving.

It was a Tuesday night, and here I'll share the first of two proposal requirements I asked of Bryce: You might wonder why a random Tuesday? I have always told Bryce to make an ordinary day extraordinary when proposing. I didn't want anything predictable (think birthday, holidays, etc), and now November 22nd will always be special to us!

I got home from work and Bryce suggested we go out to dinner. While I tended to Millie, he got the car started. Once I made it to the car, he immediately started driving. I was a bit suspicious as we normally go through the never-ending discussion of where to go to dinner (anyone else go through this!?). He started driving and was headed downtown. When we got off the expressway, he suggested we go to a favorite Mexican restaurant, Casa del Barco. He was driving straight there, and I became quite confused. Surely if he was going to be propose, it wouldn't be in the middle of a Mexican restaurant. At the last minute he turned, and it appeared that he was headed to Sine, the bar where we first connected during a mutual friend's birthday celebration. The wheels were turning now...until he drove right by Sine. At that point, I was completely confused as he drove around the neighborhood of Church Hill, suggesting several different dinner spots.

We came upon Libby Hill Park, a local park that has fabulous views of the entire city. Never having been to the park after dark, I commented on how gorgeous it looked at night as we drove by. Bryce then suggested we pull over and take a look. At this point, I knew something was up. It was freezing cold outside, so the fact that Bryce suggested we stop the car and get out was a huge clue!

We got out of the car and made our way to the edge the hill, taking in the city below. Bryce popped the question, remarking that he had chosen the location because it captured Richmond. We've both always called Richmond home, and bonded over that fact early in our relationship. He then retrieved a nice bottle of champagne that he had snuck in the car while I took care of Millie.

We enjoyed the champagne, albeit I was shivering the entire time, and were just full of giddy excitement!

Here I'll share the second requirement: I don't want anyone watching (i.e. no cameraman hiding in the bushes, no busy public place, etc)! Now, wouldn't you think a public park would be pretty secluded on a freezing cold Tuesday night? Well, guess what, it wasn't! People were coming and going like crazy! Bryce had actually scoped out the spot with the best views for the proposal, but ended up popping the question a bit further from the road down the hill where people wouldn't see! We did walk over the spot he had planned, however, and enjoyed it while sipping our bubbly!

Once we returned to the car we called our parents and made our way back to Sine to have a drink. We sat at the exact spot where we talked and talked the night we met, and used that time to share the news with some of our other best friends.

Next we headed to our most special date night spot, Edo's Squid and feasted! Finally, we made our way to Can Can, the location of our first date, for dessert. The night couldn't have been more perfect, and I loved that it happened right before the holidays, so we were able to spend Thanksgiving and Christmastime celebrating with family and friends.

I need to tune back in soon to fill you in on wedding plans (Our date of June 3 is right around the corner!), share the rest of our engagement photos, and also talk thoughts on the new year! If we get the snow they're predicting this weekend, I may have some time to hunker down and write!

Austin Recommendations, Please!

Ours was wonderful!

Friday night, we had two fun couples over for dinner, and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning with them talking and laughing. Saturday was low key. We went to see a movie with my dad and got an early dinner; and yesterday, we headed over to some of our best friends' parents' house for an oyster roast! I wish I could rewind a few days and do it all over again!

Today, I'm reaching out asking for your help.

Whenever I travel, I find myself heading to the blog to ask you all for tips. In fact, many of our trips, have almost been entirely planned via blog comments!

We're headed to Austin shortly to celebrate the wedding of one of Bryce's best friends from VMI.

To give you an idea of the "free" time we have to fill:  We'll have about half a day once our flight arrives to get settled and maybe grab a bite to eat before getting ready for the rehearsal. The next day, I'll have about half a day to myself while Bryce attends to groomsman's duties. I definitely plan to stop by the Katie Kime flagship store. What other spots should I visit downtown? Good shops? Somewhere I could grab a solo lunch? Then, post-wedding, we'll have about a day and a half to explore and do all things Austin: Where should we go for brunch these days? What about for a fancy date-night dinner? Any "attractions" we should fit in? We're staying right in downtown.

Is it just me, or has this week felt like the longest ever?

It has been raining here pretty much nonstop since Monday night which has certainly put a damper on things...it looks like the weekend ahead should be clear, though!

If the weather doesn't take a turn for the better and things stay gloomy outside, I wouldn't mind curling up with this latest issue of House Beautiful! That kitchen...mega swoon! I majorly need that island in my life...and those pendants. Speaking of kitchens, Bryce finally agreed to paint our cabinets white, something I've dreamed of for years! As long as I agree to keep our front door black, he's okay with us doing the interior painting projects I've been wanting for quite some time! I'm not sure how quickly we'll get around to it, as the house needs a few other things worked on first, but I am documenting it here as proof to hold him accountable to our agreement!

Last week we were listening to Van Morrison radio while cooking dinner, and the station was killing it! Several Chris Stapleton songs played during the course of the evening and I think he now counts as my new music obsession. Are you a fan?

Fall Fashion

I am seriously struggling with the fact that fall weather isn't quite here yet. It finally feels cool enough today that I'm wearing my riding boots. On my fall wish list this year is: a plaid, non-blanket, scarf, a cream colored Patagonia vest, and some trendy clogs! What's on yours?

Ultimate Fall Salad

Since starting my new job, I've been eating more salads. I pack my lunch most days, rather than going out or home, and have been trying to make big salads that I can eat throughout the week. I am dying to make this Ultimate Fall Salad with kale, butternut squash, and farro! I think some crispy prosciutto would also be a great addition! What are your favorite salads that stay good throughout the week?

Orzo & Spinach Salad with Lemon-Cranberry Vinaigrette

Don't you just love short weeks?

I had a great, low-key Memorial Day weekend, complete with a mix of girl time, family time, puppy time, and me time. I also was glad to get a fabulous pool day in on Saturday, especially given all the rain we've had this month! With 9.79 inches, this May broke a record set in 1889 when it rained 9.13 inches! Here's to sunshine in June!

Today I'm excited to share a favorite recipe with you: Orzo & Spinach Salad with Lemon-Cranberry Vinaigrette. I have been  meaning to share this recipe for quite some time, but always forget to take pictures, so y'all are in luck today!

I first had this salad during a family luncheon that Bryce's mom hosted. You may notice a trend that many of my favorite recipes are her's. She is an amazing chef and entertainer, so I am always learning as much as I can from her. Since then, it has become a go-to and friends often request that I share the recipe with them! What's even better is that it can be made ahead and served cold...always a plus in my book! It originally comes from the What Can I Bring? Cookbook.

Orzo & Spinach Salad with Lemon-Cranberry Vinaigrette

Ingredients

8 oz orzo pasta (2 cups)

Salt

1 pacakge (5 oz) baby spinach, rinsed and drained well

1 cup (4 oz) crumbled feta cheese

1/2 c dried sweetened cranberries, chopped

1/2 tsp grated lemon zest (1 lemon)

2 tbs fresh lemon juice (1 lemon)

1/3 c olive oil

freshly ground black pepper

1/2 cup chopped toasted pecans for garnish

Directions

Cook the orzo in boiling water uncovered with 1/2 tsp salt over medium-high heat until just done (7-8 min).

Meanwhile, place spinach, feta, and cranberries in large mixing bowl and stir to combine. Set aside.

Place the lemon zest and juice in a small mixing bowl and gradually whisk in the olive oil, a little at a time, until the lemon dressing thickens slightly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Drain the orzo well in a fine sieve (orzo is too small and fill fall through holes of a normal colander). Shake the orzo well to remove excess water. Transfer to the bowl with spinach mixture and toss.

Pour the lemon dressing over the orzo mixture and toss again to coat well. Transfer the salad to a serving bowl and garnish with the chopped pecans right before serving.

Enjoy!

I last served this for brunch the morning of my cousin's wedding. Since it was a 4:30 wedding and we bridesmaids wouldn't get the chance to eat until probably close to 6:00 pm, my aunt and I decided to cohost brunch in the bridal suite. No surprise, the orzo salad was a big hit! We also served a mimosa bar, fruit salad, pimiento cheese ham biscuits, chicken salad sandwiches, and Westhampton Pastry Shop cookies!

Bryce's mom arranged the gorgeous flowers, all fresh cut blooms from her yard!

The Blowout Bar

Happy Hump Day readers!

I am so excited that the spring weather is coming back!

Today I am sharing the highlight of my cousin's bachelorette weekend with you. When sending out the weekend itinerary, the Maid of Honor, Sarah, listed a "Surprise Activity" for Saturday afternoon. The suspense was killing me, and at book club the night before, all my friends and I were speculating on what the activity would be. That being said, I was ecstatic when Sarah announced that we were getting blowouts. SO fun!

Sarah had reserved the Blowout Bar DC for 2 hours for us that afternoon. We were all excited to get dolled up for our night out!

We were greeted with champagne.

The decor inside was perfectly girlie! Lilac walls and chandeliers really set the tone!

After sipping on some bubbly, we started taking turns rotating through. The bride went first, and I did my best to serve as paparazzi. 

The experience started with shampoo and relaxing scalp massage.

Once in the chair, you were able to select which hairstyle you'd like from their menu. Callee, the bride, and I both went with "The Grace," glamorous, loose curls.

All the staff were so  nice and accommodating! The owner ran out of peach champagne, a favorite of the group, and went to the store, returning with not only more champagne, but also delicious brownie bites! They played fun, pump up music, and even had Magic Mike playing on the TV, perfect for a bachelorette.

Callee and I both loved our loose curls, but knew that with our fine hair they would not last throughout the night. The stylist was sweet enough to give us both a touch up, with tighter curls that would make it!

After styling all 10 of us, we snapped a quick group picture before heading home to get ready for the night!

I have the joy of blogging from bed this morning. This afternoon we're leaving for my cousin's DC bachelorette. I had planned to take a half day, but didn't have anything on my calendar for work today, so decided to take some extra "me" time.

This Romper

Tomorrow night we're doing the typical black dresses and heels bachelorette look. I don't wear a lot of black and wasn't really feeling any of the few dresses I do have. I was thinking a black romper would be fun, but also didn't want to go out and splurge for what will already be a fun, but expensive weekend. The other day, I decided to pop into Francesca's thinking they might have something to fit the bill that wouldn't break the bank. Boy am I glad I did! I am IN LOVE with this romper that was only $44! I am going to pair it with black tights, these booties, this necklace, and this clutch (on sale with code BIGEVENT16). I am thinking it will look great in the summertime with wedges too! Crazy Spam Comment

Those of y'all that have blogs of your own, know that spam comes through every now and then. A big red flag, is usually when you get a new comment on a really old post. I just have to share one that was left on this post earlier this week. I already marked it as spam, so  you won't see it in the comments section now, but it is too crazy not to share! Do people actually buy this mumbo jumbo?

I recently stumbled upon Sara Platt Design's instagram through Jana Bek Design (the lady behind those fabulous brushstroke lamps). To me there is nothing quite like finding a good design account to follow and I am enjoying all her interiors eye candy. The space above is perfection! Anyone else good in the interiors world I should be following?

Lexington Wedge

Remember these babies? I first mentioned them in my Spring Wish List post LAST YEAR? I love them, want them, need them. I only ever buy Tory Burch shoes on sale, though. And last year, while teaching, I rarely was at my desk; so by the time  I opened the sale email, my size was long gone. I continued to scour the internet looking for them months and months later, never to have any luck. My old tan wedges were ruined 2 summers ago in wet grass at a wedding and I made them last through last summer but now I'm in the market for a replacement pair and these coveted wedges are back. What's a girl to do? Splurge? Wait for a sale and risk missing out again?

Maine Getaway

Happy Thursday, lovies!

I have a busy day ahead! Meetings all morning, a work event tonight, and preparations for my Valentine Making Party tomorrow! I will definitely be sleeping in a bit in the morning!

Today I am excited to finally be sharing our Maine getaway with you!

This past August, one of Bryce's very best friends Chris got married in Kennebunk, Maine. I had never been to Maine before, so I was very excited for the trip! We decided to extend the trip by a couple of extra days after the wedding to make it our vacation for the summer. It was a fabulous trip and posting this has me wishing I was headed in Maine right now. Well...maybe not right now in cold February, but y'all know what I mean!

We left the house around 3:00 am on Friday morning and flew into Boston. After a long day and a rainy drive from Boston in the rain, we decided that our first priority was, you guessed it, getting a "lobstah" roll! We were pleased to learn that The Clam Shack, located in Kennebunkport, was home to America's best lobster roll by Food & Wine Magazine! What sets The Clam Shack apart is its round, hamburger bun and also the option to have butter, mayonnaise, or both added to your bun. We, of course, had them slop both on our buns!

With full bellies, we then walked around Kennebunkport. It was a rainy, foggy day, but that didn't dull the beauty all around us. I loved this Lock Bridge across from The Clam Shack. Tradition has it, that lovers are supposed to place a lock on the bridge and throw the key into the water to symbolize unbreakable love.

Later that afternoon, we headed to the wedding rehearsal. The bride has family that lives in Kennebunk and was lucky enough to be able to use their gorgeous historic home for both the rehearsal dinner and wedding reception.

The rehearsal dinner was in the home's garage or "barn" and was a traditional lobster boil! We feasted on lobster, clam chowder, corn on the cob, and potatoes. For dessert, we had homemade blueberry cobbler.

The next day, Bryce was tied up with groomsman activities, so he treated me to a spa day! 

I visited the Cottage Breeze Day Spa and got a body scrub and facial. I am not exaggerating, when I say it was the best spa visit I've ever had. The staff was all very friendly and thorough. I left feeling so relaxed and rejuvenated!

I then grabbed a quick lunch at Market Day before getting ready. Market Day was a really cute gourmet sandwich shop, and reminded me a lot of two of my Virginia favorites Bel Air Market and Taste. In addition to their delicious sandwiches, they had a great selection of prepared foods, cheese, wine, and craft brews. I SO wish we had a place like this in Richmond!

The wedding was at 3:00 pm at the most beautiful little chapel by the water, Trinity Chapel. The bride, Allison, was nice enough to allow me to share a few of her professional photographs from the wedding with you. The credit goes to Closer North Photography.

The ahhhhdorable lobster cake was one of my absolute favorite details from their wedding. I also really enjoyed the late night mini Maine blueberry ice cream cones!

At the ceremony, the bride, groom, and party faced outward toward the congregation. The priest's reasoning for this, was that a marriage is also about those loved ones that support you, so it is important to include them in the ceremony. I really loved this element and am saving the idea in the back of my mind...

The chapel was right off the water!

Another aspect of the wedding that bears mentioning is the food. Chris and Allison had 3 main food stations: a Virginia/Southern station, a Maine station, and an Italian station. It was delicious, and I, of course, had to sample a little bit of every station!

The next day, we headed to nearby Freeport, Maine. We had lunch at an old classic, Jameson Tavern! Bryce had a lobster roll and clam chowder and I feasted on the seafood scampi.

After lunch, we shopped around a bit and the highlight was definitely the L.L. Bean flagship store. It was incredible! I, of course, got a photo by the boot!

We had an ice cream snack before heading back to Kennebunk, and I loved all the Maine themed flavors at the shop. My favorite was the Muddy Bean Boots!

Upon making it back to Kennebunk, we relaxed for a bit and then freshened up for dinner. We were a bit over lobster at that point, and decided some yummy pasta was in order. We ate at Ports of Italy and had an amazing experience! Our service was superb, and the food was out of this world delicious! We also struck up a conversation with a couple from Atlanta at the table next to us, which was fun. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend the pappardelle which came with smoke duck breast, cherry tomatoes, and chanterelles. I am drooling right now, just thinking about it!

The next day was the last day of our trip. We headed to Snug Harbor Farm, a nursery we had passed on our way into town the first day. Gardening is one of Bryce's passions and from the road, the place looked like a gardener's dream. I am so happy we stumbled upon this place, because the visit there may have been my favorite part of the entire trip. I am going to do a whole post on Snug Harbor, but will share some teaser photos with you now!

We then headed back to Kennebunkport for one last lobster roll and a bit of shopping before making our way back to the airport.

We ate lunch at Federal Jack's and Bryce enjoyed getting to do a flight of their beers.
