Holiday Gift Guide: LADIES

Happy Monday readers!

Can you believe that Thanksgiving week is here? This fall has flown by!

This week is the biggest shopping week of the year--lots of Santas and elves are hard at work getting a head start on holiday shopping.

The last 3 years I have put together holiday gift guides for the blog and it is one of my favorite round ups of posts each year. I love, love, love finding the perfect gifts for the special people in my life and enjoy putting together guides to help you do the same.

I'm a bit behind on the guides this year, so it's going to be a whirlwind of a week! Today I am happy to share the Ladies edition of the guides. Wednesday I'll be back with the Gents and if I don't lose steam I'll finish out on Friday with Stocking Stuffers and a Black Friday sale round-up!

So without further adieu, let's get shopping!

For the pink loving, ultra girlie girls in your life,
choose gifts that are glam or will make her feel pampered!

For the decorating mavens that have a special way of always making you feel at home,
focus on unique pieces that will give their rooms and vignettes an extra dose of detail.

When it comes to your bestie, pick gifts that are as fun as she is!

For the friend that knows how to keep your belly happy,
gift pieces that will make cooking and entertaining a little more easy and fun!

For your friend that has it all, find pieces that are just as fabulous as she is!

For the littlest ladies in your life, select pieces that are both fun and functional!

What's on your holiday wishlist?

Do you have go-to gifts for the ladies in your life?

Are you a plan ahead shopper or last minute gal?

Have a great day!

Sift With Style Giveaway

Happy Hump Day readers!

I hope you are having a great week so far!

We have been having the most gorgeous weather here the last few days and it has been a treat!

I am excited today to share with you a styled look featuring a Sift with Style Millie Tassel Necklace. I first discovered Katie's fabulous necklaces when shopping in a local boutique, Bliss at 5812. I was immediately drawn to the necklaces because Katie uses bright colors and a mix of styles. They're offered at a great, reasonable price point as well, which has made them a go-to for gift giving!

All that being said, you can imagine I was very excited when Katie contacted me about styling a piece and hosting a giveaway. I decided to stray from my typical bright colors and am so glad I did. I chose the Millie with black beads and a mix of neutral colored tassels. It is the perfect mix of shades for fall.

Those of you who follow along on Instagram got a sneak peek of the necklace last week!

Keeping neutrals in mind, I decided to pair it with my absolutely favorite sweater of the season!

I found this sweater while shopping at The Dandelion in Irvington on a river weekend earlier this fall and am in love! It is oh so soft and the tunic cut makes it ultra flattering as well. It also comes in gray and I found it online here. The sweater looks great over my go-to Pixie Pants and y'all know I'm a sucker for my over-the-knee boots. Mine were bought last fall, but I found a nearly identical pair here.

Get my look here:

And now friends, you are in luck! I am giving away a Sift with Style Millie necklace on Instagram. Full directions are on the Instagram post here, BUT, I am giving my blog followers a bonus entry. If you follow via Google Friend Connect, be sure to mention it in a comment on my Instagram post and I will give you a bonus entry!

Best of luck!

Have a great day!

Five on Friday

Happy Friday friends!

I'm excited to be "checking in" today and linking up for the Five on Friday. I literally have planned to do this for the last 3 Fridays and each week it's seemed to have fallen by the wayside. Whoops!

I feel like this blog is at a bit of a crossroads. I'm not ready to say goodbye, but I feel like I'm at a point that blogging doesn't feel like the priority it once was. I appreciate your sticking around as I figure the next steps in the life of Alexandra Bee Blog. Stay tuned...

So  now onto my Friday five...these are some of my favorite posts because they can encompass whatever random tidbits are filling life or my mind of late.

ONE
One Room Challenge Reveal Favorites
I'll be honest:  I don't typically follow along with the ORC start to finish, but I do always get excited when the reveals come out. I dream of someday participating myself (whilst kicking myself for not when making over our sun room) and can only hope that the challenge is still around years from now when we're in our next home. Anyways, I went through all the reveals the other night and couldn't resist sharing a few of my faves from the line up.

The one ORC that I have followed start to finish is by one of my blogging faves, Katie of Miss Dixie. I am a huge fan of her style and loved seeing the transformation of her living room.

TWO
Best Black Booties
After starting my new job, I went on the hunt for a great pair of black booties I could wear in lieu of heels during the cold winter months. After a few online orders (and returns), I settled on this pair from Ann Taylor...and I am obsessed with them! They are so comfortable, but still have a sleek and professional look. Bonus: AT seems to have a 40% off sale every other week and I scooped these up during one such sale! You can get the same deal now through Sunday with code FRIENDS40.

THREE
Bookworm
Y'all know I love to read. I feel like something's missing if I ever find myself "in between" books. That being said, I've recently switched gears a bit with my book choices. As a little girl, my favorite books were always mysteries which later translated into thrillers as I grew up. The last few years, I've gravitated more toward traditional "chick lit" though, until recently. Lately the books I've read have been thrillers and I'm loving them. The most recent I finished was Where They Found Her by Kimberly McCreight. It was ah-mazing...such a page turner with some big twists and turns that I read almost the entire book in one night (staying up until nearly 5 am!).

FOUR
Christmas Decor
Those that follow along on Instagram know that I don't start decorating for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. That being said, I certainly start getting excited before then and have found in recent years I find myself in the Christmas spirit earlier and earlier. I have enjoyed flipping through all the Christmas catalogues that started piling up post-Halloween. While perusing holiday decor online, I recently found my zebra pillow that you probably remember from last year (here) on MAJOR SALE! This might be my favorite winter decorations and I am wishing I was able to score it at this reduced price myself, and thus, couldn't resist sharing it with you!

I am thinking this year I want to buy a few of these fun disco ball ornaments to mix in with our more traditional red and green ornaments that I use around the house to decorate!

FIVE
Diet Time
In the last few weeks I've noticed that my pants are feeling a little snug which is my cue to start being a bit more diligent with my daily choices. Y'all know that I'm a big proponent of moderation, so I'm working to lighten up my diet during the week, by going for more low-carb and low-sugar choices. Let's face it, this girl couldn't do the whole NO-carb thing, nor would I want to. Rather, I am trying to focus though on eating more smart carbs and cutting back on the breads, pastas, and sweets. With the holidays coming up and a very busy couple of months, I am giving myself a free pass as far as weekends go, but am hoping that cutting back during the week and hopefully curbing some of my cravings will do the trick. That being said...any great light or low-carb recipes I should check out? Making good choices at dinnertime is the biggest challenge for me.

What's been going on in your life lately?

Have a great weekend!

Spicy Sausage Soup

Happy Hump Day readers!

Can you believe it!? I'm posting TWICE in the same week! I may also try and link up for the Friday Five in a couple of days...hoping to be back to my old blogging self!

Today I am excited to be sharing a super yummy fall and winter recipe with you.

Bryce and I are making a conscious effort to make more soups of late. They freeze so well, that we can always get at least 2 meals out of a batch, which is a win in my book as it saves time and money!

I've been going to Pinterest, as usual, and actually went ahead and organized all my soup recipes onto one board, you can check that out here.

This past weekend, I chose this recipe from Damn Delicious and it was so tasty that I am re-posting for you here, today. As always, my notes are italicized.

Ingredients
1 tbs olive oil
1 lb spicy Italian sausage, casing removed
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 onion, diced
1/2 tsp each, dried oregano & basil (as usual, I just used my farmer's market herb seasoning)
1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (I never measure out spices, rather just load up!)
Kosher salt & freshly ground pepper, to taste
5 c chicken broth
1 bay leaf
1 lb red potatoes, diced
3 c baby spinach
1/4 c heavy cream

Directions
Heal olive oil in a large stock pot or dutch oven over medium heat. Add sausage, cooking about 3-5 minutes until browned. Make sure to crumble the sausage as it cooks (I used a potato masher for this step).

Stir in garlic, onion, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Cook, stirring frequently, until onions have become translucent, about 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Stir in chicken broth and bay leaf. Bring to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until tender, about 10 minutes.

Stir in spinach until it begins to wilt, about 1-2 minutes. Stir in heavy cream until heated through, about 1 minute. Remove bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve immediately with a warm crusty bread!

As mentioned, this recipe was so flavorful! It was also very easy and fast; one I will definitely be adding to the arsenal!

Any favorite soup recipes I should try?

What are your go-tos for quick, but delicious dinners?

Have a great day!

Update: I LOVE My New Job!

Happy Monday friends!

I hope you have been doing well. I can't believe that we're already nearing the end of October. This is my favorite month and time of year.

I have really wanted to post at least once a week, but it just hasn't happened. I make no promises for the next few months, BUT, have high hopes of getting back on track in 2016.

I have been meaning for so long to do a big update post on my job.

First and foremost, I must share that I am absolutely loving it. While I felt very excited this summer when I made the leap to resign from teaching, I was also very scared about what the next months would bring. I wasn't sure how long it would take to get hired...or to find the right career fit. I fully expected that this first job would likely be a stepping stone job and a way to gain some experience while searching for my exact niche. I was very lucky, however, to find a job not only quickly, but to find my niche quickly too. I can honestly say that the position I am in is such a perfect fit, and is no stepping stone, but the real deal!

I am working in development for the local chapter of a national charity organization.  We raise funds to better our local community in the areas of education, income, and health. All of the funds we raise get funneled into local organizations through a strategic and intense grant process. Every day as I learn more about the programs we fund and the agencies we partner with, I feel more and more inspired. I come home so excited to tell Bryce about the work we do and feel so proud to get to be part of such an impactful organization. As you can imagine, the work we do in education is most near and dear to my heart, and believe it or not, I feel like I am doing more now to positively impact education than I was when I was in the classroom. While teaching I saw the problems in the public education system day in and day out, and now I am seeing solutions every day. It is a great change in perspective.

My job can be best compared to a sales job. I have a growing portfolio of accounts that I work with to run workplace campaigns in which companies ask their employees to give. A lot of the job entails public speaking to groups of employees about the work we do, but it also involves coordinating volunteer opportunities for their employees, managing distribution of marketing materials, helping to facilitate and attending events the companies put on as a part of their campaigns, linking employees to resources in the community that can be helpful to them, and much, much more. Every day looks a little different and I love that. I am also really enjoying the flexibility. Teaching was so regimented and every day followed a strict schedule. Now my hours vary some day to day according to the meetings and events that are going on. I'm in and out of the office frequently and enjoy how quickly that makes the days go by.

And last, but certainly not least, my coworkers are amazing. We are a tight-knit team and my transition onto the team has felt very seamless. Everyone in the office has been so welcoming and always willing to help or answer questions as I learn about this new field. We have so much fun at work every day and I find myself constantly smiling and laughing. My boss (as well as  her boss) makes sure to always acknowledge the work we are doing and until now, I didn't realize just how under-appreciated teachers are. Being in an environment where you are praised and appreciated really makes a huge difference.

I've received a lot of emails since taking my leap of faith and all I can say (especially to those of you who are struggling in the teaching world), is that it's not worth it to be in a job that doesn't please and fulfill you. I knew I was unhappy, but now being in a career that makes me happy, I realize just how miserable I actually was. All aspects of my life are better now, and it is so nice not dreading work every night or on Sundays. I also come home and have energy. Teaching was so draining that oftentimes, I felt I couldn't even piece together a coherent sentence, and now, I come home energized for whatever the night may hold.

I am so excited to see where this adventure takes me next.

Thanks for all your words of support, as well as those of you that reached out to specifically help me with my search. I most certainly would not have had the courage to take the step I did, were it not for the support from my loved ones and friends.

Have you ever gone through a similar period in your life?

Have a great day!
