Five on Friday

Happy Friday, readers!

How are things going?

I'll be the first to admit, I've hit the summer blogging slump. On top of that, things are gearing up at work. Fall is our busiest time of year and now we are starting to get busy with preparations for the upcoming season.

I am glad to tune in today, though, linking up with the 5 on Friday ladies!

ONE

Like probably all of you, I also love the off-the-shoulder trend and have been on the hunt for a top that I love...that doesn't break the bank. I've found it in this top! It actually reminds me a lot of this top that I fell in love with, but was way out of my price range with a tag of $395! I love loose, flowy tunics, and this has a similar feel! I also love this barely there salmon color! It also comes in white, a pale blue stripe, and a dark blue stripe. I have a 20% off code right now, which brings this shirt in as a steal at under $60. You can get your own code, by completing this brief survey. What summer trends are you loving?

TWO

I try to not share things here on the blog that I can't link back to an original source, but this pin was too good not to share. Those who follow along on Insta, know that I've caught the running bug. For the last month and a half, I have been running every 2-3 days, a minimum of 3 times per week. I have always said "I am not a runner" but have finally reached a point that I crave my runs. I've been using the Running for Weight Loss app, which is an interval training program. I started at the beginner level and in the beginning, it was mostly just walking and running. Now I am doing mostly running and sprints. Toward the very last leg of the workouts, I find myself at a point (typically after a tough uphill sprint), where I just want to stop and walk. At that point, I just repeat to myself in my head over and over, "Running slow is better than walking." You can imagine, therefore when I saw this pin, it really resonated. Now I just need to get my diet in shape! What are your best motivators to stay fit?

THREE

I can't get enough of this "Head Over Boots" song by Jon Pardi. It is so cheesy, but I love it! I always find myself listening to country more in the summertime. What have you been listening to lately?

FOUR

I can't believe that 4th of July is just next weekend! Time, as always, is flying! Earlier this week, we had dinner with Bryce's mom and we discussed coming up with some creative blueberry cocktails for the holiday, as the blueberry bushes at the river are overflowing with berries. I couldn't resist going to Pinterest for some inspiration, and think the champagne cocktail pictured above sounds like a winner! I also will likely be making my Patriotic Popcorn (recipe here). What are your 4th plans?

FIVE

I first came across Bradley of the blog Luella & June on Instagram here. I was immediately drawn to her preppy, punchy style! I still follow along mostly on Insta, but also like perusing her blog for fashion eye candy! If only I had an unlimited budget to fill my closet with all of her beautiful pieces...do you follow Bradley? Any other favorites I should be following?

So there you have it! My 5 on Friday!

Five on Friday

Happy Friday readers!

Can you believe May is practically here!?

I hate that April has been a bit of a slow blogging month for me. I am ready for and have high hopes for May!

Today I'm sharing 5 random tidbits for the Five on Friday.

ONE
The Tory Burch Spring Event is here!!!!

My patience has finally paid off...Tory Burch's big spring sale is here! She is offering up to 30% just about everything with code BLOOM. I've known that she usually hosts this sale in April, and often launches it on a Thursday so I have been monitoring my inbox like a hawk! Yesterday my dreams came true and I was finally able to order the much coveted Lexington Wedge! They've already are shipped and are due to arrive on Monday...I can't wait!

And if I wasn't on a budget, I would certainly splurge on more items during the sale. Like these...

and these...

I'm not always a biggest fan of Tory clothing, but she's killing it this season, right? And if I had my bikini bod in shape, I'd be splurging on some swimwear; like these...

And I of course, always swoon over her handbags. Like these...

Have you shopped the sale yet? What did you score?

TWO
Southern....C....Summit!

I can't believe that this time next week, the Southern C Summit and my trip to Charleston will be wrapping up. I don't know what I'm most excited for...the amazing swag bag; drool-worthy welcome brunch; poolside yoga; or books, bites, and sips, just to name a few! Be sure you follow along on Instagram to join me in Summit adventures!

THREE
Chicken Balti Al Fresco

Those that follow on Instagram saw that last night Bryce and I had the first al fresco meal on our patio for the season! It was a gorgeous night and a real treat after Bryce's travels earlier in the week. What made it even better was that Bryce took all the initiative on dinner...he meal planned, shopped, and cooked. I was in heaven! We tried a new recipe Bryce had seen on the show Mind of a Chef and it did not disappoint. You can find the Chicken Balti recipe here.

FOUR
La Croix Cocktails...yes, please!

I've shared my love of La Croix, particularly coconut on social media before. Those of you that follow along on Facebook particularly liked this link that I shared. That being said, I figured I'd share on here, as well: "9 Cocktails Made with LaCroix, a Sparkling Water with a Cult Following." One of my go-tos at home, is simply Coconut La Croix with a lime wedge (or two!) and vodka!

FIVE
Seeking Dry Shampoo Recs!

Cracking up over this eCard right now! I got my hair done early last week and talked to my hair dresser a lot about the appropriate frequency for washing hair. I have fine hair that tends to get oily pretty fast and never quite understood how people could go days between washes. She explained that it's really about training your scalp for less washes. When you shampoo every day, it dries your scalp out, and in turn you produce more oil. I'm on week two of washing my hair every 2-3 days and it's going okay so far. I use baby powder as dry shampoo as necessary, but am thinking I may  need something better, particularly for day 3. Any recommendations?

Christmas Projects Round-Up

Happy Thursday chickies!

If you haven't gathered from my recent blog posts and Instas, I LOVE Christmastime!

To me, it really is the most wonderful time of the year, and I love the spread of Christmas cheer all around!

Over the years, I've posted a few Christmastime DIYs and ideas, and thought it might be nice to round them all up into one post, especially for my newer readers.

DIY Ornament Wreath
I have always loved, loved, loved ornament wreaths. I think they are classic, while still being fun and definitely glam.  Two years ago, I made an ornament wreath for our front door and posted the directions. Sadly, last spring, I knocked it down in the shed, and many ornaments broke. I made a new one last night and am so pleased with it! These wreaths are really easy to make, affordable, and only take about an hour.

I stuck with the pink and green theme of my original, but added a few small red ornaments and also a bow this time around. I am very happy with these "upgrades". You can see the directions of how to make your own ornament wreath at the bottom of this post.

DIY Jingle Bell Bow
When I was teaching, we always had a "Jingle Bell Run" on the last day of school before the holiday break. My firs year, a teacher friend and I made really cute jingle bell bows to wear. Since then, my bow has become a favorite accessory for holiday soirees and events, and I have made several as gifts for girlfriends. Directions for how to make this bow in under 5 minutes can be found in this post.

DIY Ribbon Christmas Tree
With that same, crafty teacher friend, I also made a ribbon Christmas tree a few years ago. It was a really fun project and to this day, I am wishing that I had made 2 to have as a pair for decorating! Get the directions in this post.

Cookies & Cocktails Party
Last year, I hosted a Cookies & Cocktails party for my kindergarten team. It was a lot of fun and a great time to "escape" the stresses of school and just enjoy time together as a team. I am hoping to host a similar party for my new team this year...just need to nail down a date! To get inspiration to host your own Cookies & Cocktails party, and a recipe for a Peppermint White Russian, check out this post.

What are some of your favorite Christmas DIYs or traditions?

I am hoping to be back next week with a Christmas home tour. All our decorating is done, except for the tree. I am hosting book club tonight and would not have room for my guests and a tree in the living room, so we are hoping to move our tree inside and decorate it this weekend!

I am also hoping to get my Stocking Stuffer Gift Guides done by the end of next week. Each guide takes about an hour, so between the Ladies & Gents guides, I've already put in 10+ hours and needed a bit of a break! Check those guides out here and here.

Have a great day!

Summer Sangria

Happy Monday friends!

I hope you had a great weekend! Mine was fun, but jam-packed! This morning I am moving slow and fighting what I am hoping is just allergies and not the start of a summer cold! I am thankful for a dreary day to relax!

When I very first started blogging, I posted a recipe for sangria that quickly became a go-to! I hadn't made it yet this summer and got the urge a few weekends ago! Being that it was so long ago that I first shared the recipe, I decided I would share it with you again today! It is a simple recipe that can be easily made in a pinch!

Ingredients
1 bottle of red wine (a cheaper wine is fine here)
1 lemon, cut into wedges
1 orange, cut into wedges
1 lime, cut into wedges
1 small can of diced pineapples, with juice
2 tbs sugar
a splash of orange juice
2 shots of gin or triple sec (you can be generous here)
1 cup strawberries
4 cups of gingerale
ice

Directions
1. Pour wine into large pitcher and squeeze the juice out of the wedges of lemon, orange, and lime into the wine. Toss in fruit wedges.

2. Add the can of pineapple to the wine mixture, making sure to pour all the pineapple juice in.

3. Add sugar, OJ, and gin/triple sec.

4. Stir and chill overnight. (This step can be skipped if you are in a time crunch)

5. Add gingerale, strawberries, and ice just before serving.

6. Enjoy!

I enjoyed mine out of the "Alexandra Bee" stadium cup that Peach Tea Monograms custom made just for me! If you haven't checked out their Etsy site, be sure to head over and see all their cute monogrammed goodies. You can also enter my giveaway for one of their monogrammed mason jar tumblers by clicking here

Have a great day!

Cookies & Cocktails: PEPPERMINT WHITE RUSSIAN

Happy Friday readers!

I hope this week has been good to you! I am still plugging along to make it to next Friday and a much needed winter break!

Anyone in education knows that these last few weeks before break are crazy! There are all sorts of holiday activities going on at school and every day the kids get a bit more excited and a bit more wild!

To offer some stress relief during this hectic time, I had the kindergarten team over the other night for Cookies & Cocktails. It was such a fun little holiday celebration!

I made the cookies and set the table
ahead of time the night before!

To munch on, I served poppy seed ham biscuits (recipe here), bacon cheddar dip (made from a pack bought at Southern Season, so good), and chocolate chip cookies (recipe here).

To sip I served a Pomegranate Prosecco Spritzer and Peppermint White Russians!

I wasn't too keen on how the spritzer turned out, but the Peppermint White Russians were delicious, so I thought I would share the recipe with you today!

Peppermint White Russian
2 parts Peppermint Mocha Kahlua
2 parts Milk or Cream
1 part Vodka
*Garnish with crushed candy canes and peppermint marshmallows!

What are your favorite holiday beverages?

Fun weekend plans ahead?

We have a black tie party tonight and I know I'll be drinking another Peppermint White Russian or too!

Have a great weekend!

Spiked Cream Soda

Happy 4th friends!

I hope you are having a wonderful time celebrating!

I thought today I would share a yummy cocktail with you!  I will certainly be sipping on these during the weekend's festivities.

The recipe is nothing life changing...actually it's quite simple:  Vodka + Cream Soda.  That's it.

You can also put a spin on it, by using orange vodka...Dreamsicle anyone?   A splash of grenadine is quite yummy, too!

What will you be sipping on this weekend?

Any fun plans?

Our weekend has been off to a great start!  Last night we had happy hour and dinner at one of our local favorites, Estilo!  Today we have a pool party to attend and then later are heading to a 4th celebration at Bryce's country club.  It should be lots of fun!

Have a safe and happy 4th!

Charleston Eats

Happy Friday readers!

This Friday is especially exciting because it's Memorial Day Weekend!

Today I am finally getting around to sharing my Charleston dining post with y'all.  Things have been good, but hectic, around here so I'm glad I was finally able to sit down last night and give this post the attention it deserved.

So, here goes!

BRUNCH

Our first morning in Charleston, we visited the Marion Square Farmer's Market.  The crepes at the market came highly recommended so I was excited to give them a try.  I had the ham, egg, and cheddar cheese crepe, but also added diced potato to it!  Bryce and I also split a nutella chocolate crepe.  My verdict on this experience was that the crepes were very good, but you should expect quite a wait.  If you're starving, a crepe might not be your best bet at the Farmer's Market!  Bryce got food from another vendor and ate it, all in the time that I was waiting in line for my crepe.

Poogan's Porch was my favorite brunch spot during the trip.  The atmosphere was charming and the food was deee-lish!  We started with fried green tomatoes and she crab soup.  For our entrees, I had the pulled pork eggs benedict and Bryce had the chicken & waffles.  Both were incredibly good and their presentation was beautiful.  I highly recommend Poogan's.

We hadn't initially planned to check out Hominy.  A friend had suggested the chocolate croissants at Macaroon, however, our plans changed when we discovered they were closed on Mondays.  The reviews we'd heard on Hominy made it seem that it was a love it or hate it kind of place.  Curiosity got the best of us, so we decided to check it out ourselves.  Our verdict?  We were split down the middle! Bryce ordered the huevos rancheros and said they were the best he's ever eaten.  I, ordered a simple omelette and was unimpressed.  My guess is that their specialty foods (like the huevos) are probably great, but perhaps their standard options (like the omelette) are more average.

We stopped for an early breakfast at the Marina Variety Store Restaurant before hitting the road our last morning.  It was definitely a hole in the wall and a spot for locals.  The views of the water were beautiful and the food hit the spot!  I ordered a breakfast biscuit and Bryce had the fried green tomato & pimiento cheese benedict. I also had a cup of hot chocolate that was scrumptious!  I would recommend this restaurant, especially for a day that you want a quick and satisfying breakfast.

LUNCH

Poe's Tavern on Sullivan's Island:
Poe's was recommended by many friends, so after lounging on the beach for a bit, we treated ourself to an afternoon snack/lunch at the tavern.  Bryce is an Edgar Allan Poe fan (he was, after all, a Richmonder) so I knew he would love it.  We ordered the cheese fries and the spiced yellowfin tuna fish tacos.  The cheese fries were honestly a bit of a disappointment, but, the fish tacos were delicious! We ate at the bar and loved the laid back, yet energetic atmosphere.  Our time spent on the beach and at Poe's was one of the highlights of our trip and I would definitely suggest visiting the Poe's Tavern when on Sullivan's Island.

DINNER

Our first night, my flight got in pretty late so we decided to just walk to Rue de Jean, which was right by our hotel.  The French restaurant reminded us of Can Can, the location of our first date, and did not disappoint.  We started with the mussels in the pistou sauce, and I kid you not, they were the best mussels I've ever eaten.  As an entree, I had the cavatelli pasta with seared scallops and was equally impressed. The fusion of flavors was incredible.  Bryce had the braised rabbit, which was also delicious.  I would definitely recommend Rue de Jean (and think that Can Can could take a few pointers from them)!

Our second night in Charleston we had a double date, with blogger Cambron, at Magnolia's.  This was my least favorite dinner in Charleston, but that's not to say it wasn't good--rather, all the restaurants where we ate were incredible, so this is just the least incredible, in my opinion.  We started with two appetizers: the fried green tomatoes and a pork belly special.  The appetizers hit it out of the park.  They were AH-mazing, especially the pork belly special.

I had the filet as an entree which was topped with pimiento cheese.  The cheese was melted on top and I think I would have enjoyed it more if they had cooked the filet and then just topped it with a spread of pimiento cheese.  Bryce had the shellfish over grits, and really enjoyed it--the creamy sauce was heavenly!

Finally, we completed the meal by sharing the warm strawberry shortcake.  The cake itself was a lemon buttermilk cake, and the combination of strawberry and citrus flavors was wonderful.

The Macintosh (our favorite!!!):
The Macintosh was our favorite dinner of the trip.  Everything we ordered was well thought out and unique, and the service was second to none.  We started with drinks at the bar.  I tried the Paloma Flower, which a friend had told us about.  The drink is garnished with part of a flower that is used to make pepper.  Before sipping the drink, you are supposed to take a small bite of the flower.  The drink, then reacts with the flower and creates a sensation in your mouth, similar to that of pop rocks.  It was definitely an interesting experience!

Once we were seated we ordered the sauteed scallops appetizer.  I'll admit that when they first served them to us, I was a bit disappointed by how few scallops were on the plate.  Despite the portion size, though, they did not disappoint.  In fact, they were absolutely scrumptious.  They also came with roasted beets, bacon tortellini, beet mostarda, turnip greens, and turnip puree.  We did everything shy of licking the plate.  Nothing was left...it was all so tasty!

For entrees, I ordered the seared grouper.  It came with sunchoke cacciatore and a country ham emulsion.  The cacciatore gave it an Italian taste.  Bryce ordered a duck special that was also insanely good.  It had an Asian flavor.  We also shared an order of the bone marrow spoon bread which can only be described as out of this world--I've had dreams about that bread!

Finally, for dessert we shared the banana mousse with peanut brittle.  For someone that's not a huge fan of bananas, I certainly gobbled up my fair share!  It was decadent!

For us what really set The Mac apart from the other restaurants was their attention to detail.  Each plate was comprised of foods, sauces, and seasonings that perfectly complemented each other.  When you took a bite, you wanted to take a bite that included a little bit of everything on the plate.  For example, when eating my grouper, I didn't simply eat the fish and then munch on the sides separately--I literally scooped a bit of everything onto my fork at once.  The flavors all went together so well, that in order to really experience the meal, you literally had to dig in.

Husk:
Being that Husk is one of Charleston's best known restaurants, we saved it for the last night.  I booked these reservations more than a month in advance, as an FYI.  Many people recommended getting a drink at the bar (which is in a separate building adjacent to the restaurant) before our reservation and we were so glad we did.  Bryce proclaimed that it was the coolest bar he'd ever been to!  He sipped on Husk's Jefferson's Reserve Presidential 18 Year and I had a cocktail appropriately named The Teacher's Lounge.

After a drink (or two!), we headed next door for our reservation.

We started with the cornmeal fried oysters and wood fired clams appetizers.  Husk changes their menu daily, but if you happen to be there on a day that they have the fried oysters I highly recommend them! I'll admit, oysters are not my favorite, but these were fabulous.  The clams were also good, but a bit smoky in my opinion.

For entrees, I ordered a steak that came with goat cheese mashed potatoes and roasted mushrooms and spinach.  The steak was cooked to perfection.  The sides however didn't impress me.  I found the mashed potatoes to be good, but pretty average and the mushrooms were way too smoky.  Bryce ordered the honey pecan glazed duck leg, which came with roasted brussels sprouts and butternut squash with bourbon broth.  Oooh my goodness--the duck was the best duck I have ever put in my mouth.  It was to die for! I probably ate almost half of it, despite having my own meal.  Again, though, the sides didn't have pack the same wow factor and most of the sprouts and squash went uneaten.  Finally, we ordered a side of cornbread.  I am very picky about my cornbread and can't stand for it to be dry and grainy.  Husk's style of cornbread was that very style so it wasn't my favorite. Bryce liked it fine, however.

One of the things that really impressed me about Husk was their devotion to organic and locally sourced foods.  Much of their menu contains options with pickled ingredients that Husk pickles themselves.  There is also a huge board in the entry with descriptions of where all ingredients on the menu that day can be sourced.

COCKTAILS & DESSERTS

Saturday night, before meeting Cambron and her beau, we grabbed drinks at Gin Joint which was across the street.  I was excited to try it, because I had heard about their "Bartender's Choice" cocktail, where you get to choose two adjectives from a list and are surprised with a drink.  I chose fizzy and refreshing and received the Floradora Cocktail with candied ginger as a garnish.  Bryce ordered their Cask Strength Old-Fashioned and I also treated him to a shot of the Pappy Van Winkle 23 Year.

Sunday night, before heading to The Macintosh, we decided we would just pick a place at random on King Street for a cocktail.  I suggested Closed for Business when I saw that they had a large selection of draught beers.  Bryce really enjoyed it because they had many of his favorite, rare beers.  I thought the atmosphere was also very cool.

Our last night, after eating at Husk, we walked to the dessert bar Kaminsky's.  In addition to a menu with dessert martinis and sweet treats, they also have a case filled with different pies and cakes.  I had the cookie sundae and Bryce had pineapple upside down cake!  It was a fun atmosphere, and I'll just say walking home afterwards was necessary.  We were so full and a walk definitely helped!

So there you have it!  As you can see, we certainly did eat and drink our way through Charleston!

Have you ever been to any of these restaurants?

Have a different opinion than mine? (Sometimes, it really depends on what you order...)

Have any other favorite Charleston spots?

We are already discussing another Charleston getaway and I'm sure that will be full with a slew of other amazing restaurants!
