10 Tips for New Runners

Happy Tuesday friends!

This post is long overdue, as I had meant to post it in January with New Year's resolutions. That said, today marks 1 year since my running journey began and I can't think of a better time to share than September when fall and cooler weather is right around the corner!

Prior to last September, I always called myself a seasonal runner. I'd find myself hitting the pavement each fall when cool weather would creep in and the leaves would start changing. As soon as winter came, the leaves fell from the trees, and temperatures dropped below about 50° my runs would come to a halt until the first warm weather of spring would creep in and the leaves would begin emerging once again. Last year, for reasons still unbeknownst to me, that changed, though. I found myself craving my runs and discovered that cold weather runs are by far my favorite. After running the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, I made a goal to complete a 10 miler by the New Year. Since then, I've run the Shamrock Half Marathon and the Monument Avenue 10k. I've run each and every month - some months more than others - and have logged a total 327 miles.

I've shared snippets along the way on Instagram, as a way to keep myself accountable, and have gotten many requests from you to share my tips. Particularly tips to take those first steps, so am compiling my top 10 here today!

ONE
JUST GO!
My number one tip is to just go! My biggest running cheerleader is a best friend who's both a physical therapist and marathon runner. She always says "The first mile is a liar" insinuating that it's harder than the rest. Set your own pace and set small goals and milestones to celebrate along the way.

TWO
COMMIT TO A ROUTINE
I'll be the first to admit that the last couple of months I've failed at this one. Between sickness, work, and heat, making running a routine has been tough. That said, when you're just getting started a routine is key. Commit to running at least 2-3 times per week, with recovery days in between. You'll be amazed at how quickly you build endurance and stamina as you make running a habit.

THREE
DON'T BE AFRAID TO WALK
As I mentioned above, set your own pace at the beginning. To expand on that, don't be afraid to stop and walk if you need. Your first goal may be to work up to a mile without stopping, but if the first few runs you have to stop at half a mile, do it! It's amazing what just a short 30 seconds, 1 minute, or 1 block walking break will do to reenergize you. If giving yourself a walking break or two means you can run 3 miles instead of 2, it's well worth it!

FOUR
PINPOINT YOUR "EASY RUN"
Once you've been running a few weeks, pinpoint what feels like an easy distance to run (this can, should, and will change as you run more). Use this "easy run" to negotiate with yourself. For me that's 3 miles. On days that I'm really not feeling motivated, I use my easy run as a negotiation. I tell myself "I'll just run an easy 3 miles." More often than not once I get started, I get in a groove and run 4, 5, or even 6 miles...again, the first steps are the hardest, so bargain with yourself if you need.

FIVE
MEASURE YOUR RUNS IN HALF MILE INCREMENTS
This tip stems from my Type A tendencies, but I do think makes a difference when you're working to increase your distance. I have my running app (I use Map My Run) set to alert me at half mile intervals. I always stop on the mile or half mile for my cool-down. Once you've worked your way up to running 2 or 3 miles with ease, adding a half mile, which is about 5 minutes, doesn't seem so tough. Sometimes you'll even get to that half mile point and realize you've got an extra 5 minutes in you and can push another half mile. Once you get to running even longer distances, it can become a mind game and I even will equate half miles to songs. 10 minutes more is about 2 songs (give or take), so I'll tell myself "You can run for just 2 more songs!" if I've got a mile left.

SIX
REMEMBER EVERY RUN IS DIFFERENT
Keep in mind that every run is different. I've worked myself up to a "normal" run being around 5 miles, and that even feels easy sometimes. There are days, however (if it's really hot, or, I ate a big lunch, for example) when just 3 miles can be brutal. I never beat myself up for those runs, though, and always tell myself that running slow or a short distance is better than stopping or skipping the run altogether.

SEVEN
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
For me, scenery is huge! I beeline it out of my neighborhood as soon as I can making my way to Grove Avenue, where I can loop in and out of all of my favorite Richmond neighborhoods admiring the pretty houses. Being surrounded with beauty, as well as other people and activity, makes my runs so much more enjoyable. When I get in a rut, I'll also switch up my route slightly, or run down a street I've never run before to keep things fresh. Similarly, whenever I'm out of town and run in a new place, I'm amazed at how far I can go, because the excitement of exploring a new place is a distraction from fatigue.

EIGHT
SAFETY FIRST
I prefer to run outside, which does bring risks. Bryce says he literally worries about me the entire time I am gone on runs. First things first, put your phone away! I've fallen twice during runs: Once in March 2018 and once last September. During the first fall, I skinned my knee really badly and also scraped my hands. During the second, I crushed my phone and had Millie with me. Both times I was looking at my phone to adjust something on my running app. After the second tumble, I immediately ordered this running belt. It's essentially a fanny pack, and not chic, but it keeps me hands free and is also waterproof! Buying shoes at a running shop recommended for your feet and gait, giving yourself recovery days, stretching and strength training will all help avoid injury. Don't run at night, but do purchase clip on lights and reflective gear for dusk runs, or times you may get accidentally caught in the dark. Wear sunscreen, especially on your face and chest!

NINE
SIGN UP FOR A RACE
Never underestimate the power of a race to hold you accountable. As mentioned above, in my Turkey Trot 10k training last fall, I loved that I had caught what I called the running bug. I was so nervous I'd give up my runs over the cold winter, so signed up for the Shamrock Half Marathon on St. Patrick's Day, because I knew it would force me to stick with it through the winter. I'm so glad I did, because winter runs became my very favorite. Not to mention, there's no feeling quite like crossing the finish line...especially when it's for a distance you never thought possible!

TEN
NEVER GIVE UP
If you're interested in running, just keep at it - never give up! As I shared, I was a seasonal runner for years, and every time I would start it was with the intention of going beyond the season. Until last fall, though, it just never stuck. I still am not sure what it is that hooked me last year, but once I was hooked, I decided to embrace it! When life happens and you fall out of the habit, do give yourself grace. For example, I only ran one time in May, then the next month in June, I ran more times than any other month during this year of running. August was a really demanding month, and likewise, I only ran once. This September is a new start, though! Never give up!

And on that note, I need to figure out my next race! My birthday falls on the Turkey Trot (also Thanksgiving) this year, but I'm not sure yet if we'll be spending Thanksgiving in town or the country this year. I'm been considering signing up for the Richmond Half Marathon, also in November, but am still working through some issues where my left hamstring meets my IT band, so am not sure 13.1 miles is the smartest, or safest (see Tip #8 above) choice at this point. Regardless, though, I know I'm not giving up!

Are you a runner?

If so, what are your tips for new runners?

Have a great day!

Five on Friday

Happy Friday, readers!

How are things going?

I'll be the first to admit, I've hit the summer blogging slump. On top of that, things are gearing up at work. Fall is our busiest time of year and now we are starting to get busy with preparations for the upcoming season.

I am glad to tune in today, though, linking up with the 5 on Friday ladies!

ONE

Like probably all of you, I also love the off-the-shoulder trend and have been on the hunt for a top that I love...that doesn't break the bank. I've found it in this top! It actually reminds me a lot of this top that I fell in love with, but was way out of my price range with a tag of $395! I love loose, flowy tunics, and this has a similar feel! I also love this barely there salmon color! It also comes in white, a pale blue stripe, and a dark blue stripe. I have a 20% off code right now, which brings this shirt in as a steal at under $60. You can get your own code, by completing this brief survey. What summer trends are you loving?

TWO

I try to not share things here on the blog that I can't link back to an original source, but this pin was too good not to share. Those who follow along on Insta, know that I've caught the running bug. For the last month and a half, I have been running every 2-3 days, a minimum of 3 times per week. I have always said "I am not a runner" but have finally reached a point that I crave my runs. I've been using the Running for Weight Loss app, which is an interval training program. I started at the beginner level and in the beginning, it was mostly just walking and running. Now I am doing mostly running and sprints. Toward the very last leg of the workouts, I find myself at a point (typically after a tough uphill sprint), where I just want to stop and walk. At that point, I just repeat to myself in my head over and over, "Running slow is better than walking." You can imagine, therefore when I saw this pin, it really resonated. Now I just need to get my diet in shape! What are your best motivators to stay fit?

THREE

I can't get enough of this "Head Over Boots" song by Jon Pardi. It is so cheesy, but I love it! I always find myself listening to country more in the summertime. What have you been listening to lately?

FOUR

I can't believe that 4th of July is just next weekend! Time, as always, is flying! Earlier this week, we had dinner with Bryce's mom and we discussed coming up with some creative blueberry cocktails for the holiday, as the blueberry bushes at the river are overflowing with berries. I couldn't resist going to Pinterest for some inspiration, and think the champagne cocktail pictured above sounds like a winner! I also will likely be making my Patriotic Popcorn (recipe here). What are your 4th plans?

FIVE

I first came across Bradley of the blog Luella & June on Instagram here. I was immediately drawn to her preppy, punchy style! I still follow along mostly on Insta, but also like perusing her blog for fashion eye candy! If only I had an unlimited budget to fill my closet with all of her beautiful pieces...do you follow Bradley? Any other favorites I should be following?

So there you have it! My 5 on Friday!

What's been on your  mind lately?

Have a great weekend!

Barre South

A sunshiney Tuesday over here, readers!

We have had pretty much non-stop rain all May, but today the sun is shining and the temperature is perfect! I am thrilled!

Today I'm excited to be posting about my experience at Barre South while visiting Charleston for the Southern C Summit. Brett, the owner of Barre South, used to live in Richmond and was my favorite barre instructor. That being said, when a trip to Charleston was in the works, I knew I had to take one of her classes! I reached out to see if she would be interested in offering a class for Summit attendees and she graciously said yes!

We planned the class for Wednesday morning, before Summit registration. It turned out to be only three of us, as many people were still traveling that morning or taking add-on sessions. I really enjoyed the intimate class, though! In addition to myself, Erin of Attention to Darling and Maghon of All She Wrote Notes, were both in attendance! If you haven't checked out Maghon's calligraphy business, be sure to! She is very talented and has collaborated with Moon & Lola and my very favorite, Furbish Studio!

The studio is absolutely gorgeous and I wanted to take one of her fabulous lanterns home with me!

Talk about a chic place to work out!

I was so excited to get to bring some Barre South swag back to Richmond!

Brett's class was awesome! She has such good energy, and her enthusiasm makes the hard class worth it!

Those of you that are familiar with barre, know that the seat exercise below is killer!

I couldn't resist snagging a pic alongside Brett! We are both wearing Superfun Yoga Pants! True story...after first taking a class with Brett, I immediately reached out to Amy of SYP saying I needed a pair of pants just like Brett's! I now have 4 pairs and having an excuse to wear them is definitely a motivator to hit the barre!

I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to be back in class with Brett...and was also glad to burn some calories before all the Charleston feasting that was to ensue! I will most definitely be visiting Barre South during any and all future Charleston trips!

If you are in the Charleston or Mount Pleasant area, be sure to take a class and let Brett know I sent ya! Also, if you want your own pair of Superfun Yoga Pants, you can order online here, or visit a Superfun Pop-Up shop! The Superfun gals will actually be at Barre South tomorrow night and Thursday morning! Details here.

Are you a fan of barre?

How do you like to stay fit?

Have a great day!

2015, a year that ANSWERED

Happy New Year readers!

Those of you that have read for a while, know that every January I like to do a post that reflects on the past year and also looks ahead to the new year.

And that's why you haven't heard from me yet this year.

I didn't want to come into January without first posting my annual New Year's post. One of my all time favorite quotes is "I cannot advise that we remain as we are" by Plato. I like to enter the new year with that in mind--embracing change, betterment. This blog has become the place for me to express that, and it just didn't feel right starting a new year of blogging, without first, reflecting on myself in the new year and sharing that with y'all.

If you remember from last year's post, 2014 was literally the worst. After a year that was so tough, I found writing a New Year's post to be cathartic. It was easy to make goals, because it felt like the only way to go was up. That being said, I've felt a lot of pressure to write this post. Can I give it the same earnest emotion as I did last year? Do I have many goals or resolutions for 2016? Is it bad, if the answer to that last question is no?

Then, yesterday morning, The SouthernC tweeted (yes, I have Twitter now! Follow here!) this:

It's one of my favorite quotes and I pinned it myself, ages ago. As soon as I saw it on Twitter, though, I knew the direction that I wanted this post to go.

Last January, I proclaimed that 2015 was "the year of doing my thing," a time to un-apologetically be myself, and also to be selfish.

So...how'd it go?

I have to say, great! 2015 was most definitely a year that answered.

Being so tough, 2014 asked a lot of questions. My relationship with Bryce was put through huge external challenges; I learned that teaching today isn't quite what I had hoped; and I really had to dig deep to determine what controlled my happiness.

By proclaiming 2015 the year of doing my thing, I found answers to those questions. It was a whirlwind year.

The biggest "answer" of the year probably comes to no surprise to you. It was the choice to leave my teaching job and seek a new career. You can read all about that choice in much more detail here and here, but all I can say was that it was the best choice. I am a new person and didn't realize just how much teaching was affecting all other parts of my life. And now, when I look back, quitting my job this summer is one of my proudest accomplishments. Having the courage to take a stand for myself, and make the unpractical decision was huge for me.

In terms of Bryce and I, our relationship is stronger than ever before. I can honestly say that he is the best partner or teammate in life--someone I can count on for literally anything and everything. My career change has also led to big improvements in our day to day relationship. I come home in a good mood and still have energy, rather than coming home frustrated and grumpy.

And finally...the happiness piece. That's a tough one. I would like to think we are all in charge of our own happiness, but I will say that a lot of my unhappiness was wrapped up in my teaching job. The reality is that we spend a majority of our time at work; so when work isn't satisfying, it does affect happiness. I struggled to "leave work at work," because teaching is so all-consuming and emotional. While I don't like that it was such a controller of my happiness, it was the reality. My control or take charge piece, however, came in when I chose that it was no longer worth it and to leave. I think taking control of one's own happiness, shouldn't be assuming that you'll always be happy, every second of every day. It is accepting that there will be bad times and good.Taking control lies in reacting to those ups and downs in the best way you can, and hopefully, ultimately, coming out of those tough times a better or happier person.

If I haven't bored you yet, I'll do a quick check of last year's official goals or resolutions and dive into how I hope to grow and improve in 2016.

Last year, I planned to:

  • Focus on Positive Relationships: Check, check check! 2015 was a great year in this department. I will say, that the not so pretty side of this, was having to walk away from or let go of some toxic relationships. But 2015 also brought lots of new and amazing people into my life. I reconnected with some old friends as well. I really feel as if my cup runneth over.
  • Spend More Time Interacting with Other Blogs: I have to admit, this was a fail. SO much happened for me in 2015, but being a star blogger was not one of those things. Does anyone else feel as if Instagram has taken over your blog?
  • Get Back to Healthy Eating: This was also a bit of a fail. While I can say, I am not very picky anymore, 2015 was a year of good eating. The Richmond restaurant scene continues to boom and Bryce and I are foodies. That, combined with a new job that includes regular lunches out, caused 2015 to be a year of weight gain for me. So...to new beginnings in 2016!
  • Build Up My Savings: I'd say this was a success. I've cut way back on my spending, particularly on clothes, and at the end of 2015, I bought my first car! Prior to that, my biggest grown-up purchase had been a mattress, so financing a car was a big step. Because I had worked on my savings, making a down payment on my car wasn't as hard as I thought. Having a monthly car payment, I think is also going to make me be more mindful of my purchases moving forward. I am going to have to stick to a tighter budget and am actually excited to be at this phase in my life.
Ahhh...and now for 2016. In all honesty, I have to say that this year is light on the resolutions. I'm so proud of how far I've come, but alas feel like I need to make a few goals. So here they are:

CONTINUE TO FIGURE OUT THIS WHOLE "GROWN-UP" THING
As mentioned above, my life is feeling more and more grown-up. I've now entered the world of car payments, started a new career, and have multiple friends with babies. Though all the responsibility can feel overwhelming from time to time, I am so happy to be at this phase of my life. You couldn't pay me to be in college again or a different phase of my life. All that, being said, I still have a lot to learn and figure out. For example, I have been putting money away for retirement for several years now. Do I fully understand the whole investment thing? No. I hope that in 2016, I can learn more about my investments, and perhaps tweak the way I am investing some of my money. On a smaller scale, I also want to get better at day to day "grown-up" things like staying on top of the laundry and meal planning.

GET BACK TO HEALTHY EATING...and lose a little weight
I can say with a lot of confidence that I will be successful in this goal. I just know I am in the right mindset. Bryce and I have started the year doing the no carb/sugar/alcohol thing, and for the most part, it's been much easier than I expected. I am already noticing differences when I put on my clothes in the morning and just feel better nourishing myself with healthy foods. After this initial phase of strictly adhering to the diet, our ultimate goal is to eat in this way most of the time. Meal planning and getting creative with our meals has been key to our success so far. (Post with a round-up of Alexandra Bee Approved Low Carb Recipes coming soon...) I also am working on my exercise routine. I am currently doing a New Year Barre Challenge of 20 classes in 30 days, which has been a great way to hold myself accountable. After that concludes, I want to start taking cycle classes 1-2 times a week in addition to barre.

BLOG
Plain and simple, I want to blog again...with consistency and routine. The last several months I've had a laundry list of posts, but have lacked the initiative to sit down and write them. As mentioned before, sometimes I feel like Instagram has overtaken the blogworld; but point blank, at the end of the day, I really love writing here. Bryce has a lot of studying to do in the coming months as he prepares for the Professional Engineering Exam in April, so I am hoping that we can carve out study/blog time that will be helpful.

Weight Loss: How I've Done It

Happy Thursday friends!

Have y'all had a good week so far?
Mine has been much better than I was expecting being that it's the first week back after Spring Break, however, exhaustion has definitely hit!

My flight didn't come in from Orlando until late Sunday night, which made for an early morning on Monday.  Surprisingly, I breezed through Monday and Tuesday (likely running on adrenaline alone) and then exhaustion hit big time Tuesday evening.

That being said, I haven't even added pictures from my trip to the computer yet and am still getting all my ducks in a row since being home.

I have some great posts in the works, but, honestly just don't have the energy to put them all together.

After my last post, Resolutions Update and an April Fool, many of you asked how I've managed to lose 18 pounds.  I thought today I'd share what's worked for me and some basic tips I've picked up.

This will be a text heavy post, so I've tried to add in some Pinterest inspiration along the way and apologize now if I bore you!

But, before I continue, I'll give you the answer to my 3 Truths and a Lie for April Fools.  To recap, here is the list:

  1. Bryce and I met during my 4th year at UVA.
  2. I am naturally a brunette.
  3. I was a psych major in college.
Surprisingly, most of y'all guessed right; the lie was #1!  Bryce and I did not meet until the summer after my fourth year through mutual friends here in Richmond.  Here is a link to the first post I ever mentioned him in, and if you scroll through "Newer Posts" from there, you'll find a recap of the early days of our romance.  I can't believe it was nearly 2 years since that first post and since first meeting my B.

Additionally, I'll mention the other 2 truths.  I am naturally a brunette-kinda.  As a little girl I was blonde, but during high school my hair gradually changed into a dull brown.  I was born a blonde, and therefore think it's in my soul (ha!), but technically now would qualify as brunette.  And secondly, I was a psych major in college and also earned my Masters of Teaching while at UVA.

Okay, now onto the nitty gritty:  losing weight!

Part 1:  Simple Changes

I started the post with that picture because it really has proven true for me.  Around a year ago, I tried to start losing weight, pretty much by working out alone.  I saw virtually no results!  I may have firmed up a bit, but as a whole, working out alone was worthless.

This time around I changed my diet and the first 5 or 6 pounds fell off without setting foot in a gym.

I started slow:  Sometime around the end of November or early December I cut Cokes out of my lunch.  I only drank one of the small 90 calorie cans each day and always justified it telling myself "It's only 90 calories!"  But what I didn't think about is what makes up those calories--sugars, chemicals, caffeine!  I switched to water, and usually add some lemon slices to it for flavor!

I also began focusing more on my body's natural cues at that point.  I had gotten into a really bad habit of overeating all the time.  Rather than eating until I felt comfortable, I ate until I was overly full and usually felt like I was going to burst.

With just these two simple changes I lost the first 5 or 6 pounds-- it was painless!

Part 2:  Taking It to the Next Level

I was thrilled by those first pounds that came off, however, I knew that those simple changes weren't enough to reach my goals.  Once the new year began, I knew it was time to take it to the next level.

I did that in a few ways:

  1. REALLY changing my diet!
  2. Working out, some
  3. Allowing myself some leeway
  4. Keeping my eyes on the prize
1.
Diet

First things first, y'all know I'm a Southerner and you know how we Southerners eat.  We love our comfort food.  As stated in my bio on the side, mac and cheese is and will always be one of my favorite foods.  However, I knew I needed to take a step away from the comfort foods (carbs in particular) if I wanted to see real and lasting results.

I changed my diet in 3 major ways:
  • Switching to a low carb diet
  • Switching to a low sugar diet
  • Adjusting portion size
I should start my explanation of that low carb diet bullet with:  "Hi, my name is Allie and I'm a recovering carbaholic."  I LOVE carbs--my favorite food is by far pasta and I love carbs in just about every form.  Now, however, pasta dinners are more of a reward, rather than the norm.  I also have been more strategic when it comes to carbs.  I knew that a zero carb diet just wouldn't work for me, so now I focus more on adding complex and gluten free carbs to my meals (especially polenta!).

Additionally, I have really cut my sugar consumption down.   At the beginning of March I did a two week sugar free cleanse to boost metabolism and curb cravings.  I've found that when you break the habit of eating things like sugars, the cravings tend to go away.  Not only have I cut back on sweets, but also sugars in many different forms.  For example, I switched from Honey Nut Cheerios (9g sugar/serving) to Rice Chex (1 g sugar/serving) for my morning cereal and cut my lemon yogurt out of my lunch (13 g sugar).  I also cut sodas out completely about 2 months ago (aside from the occasional cocktail with Sprite).  When I initially started, I still allowed myself Coke when out to dinner or after a particularly long day, but now I don't drink it at all!

Finally, I really adjusted portion sizes.  Being that I'm not a fitness or health expert, I can't really verbalize what my portions are now, however, I'd reiterate what I said earlier:  I eat until I no longer feel hungry and feel comfortable, rather than eating until I feel full or stuffed.  To give you an idea, I'll share an Instagram pic of my dinner one night:

You'll notice the salad is the biggest portion on my plate!

Now to give you an idea of what all this "low-carb, low-sugar, reduced portion size" mumbo jumbo means, I'll share a typical day's eating with you!  I decided to include two dinners for a bit of variety!

You get the idea, right?

2.
Working Out, some

This will be short and sweet:
  • Find a work out you love (for me, that's spin classes!)
  • Workout when you can.  (for me, that's usually about 2 times/week, sometimes 3, sometimes only 1!)
  • Like I mentioned before, 70% diet, 30% exercise--if you eat well, working out is more for toning!
3.
Allowing myself some leeway

This has been key.  I strongly believe that my changed eating habits are not a diet, so much as a lifestyle.  HOWEVER, you'll never be able to maintain a healthy diet if you don't allow yourself some leeway.  People who limit themselves completely are more likely to give up or get to a point where they binge after depriving themselves for too long!

I'm a firm believer that most everything is okay in moderation.  I eat somewhat bland cereal 5-6 days/week for breakfast.  BUT, you better believe I indulge on the weekends!  Brunch is one of my favorite outings.  On weekends I allow myself chocolate chip pancakes, waffles, or cheesy omelets for breakfast!

Additionally, when I'm out to dinner, one of the last things I'm ever going to order is a salad.  Going out to dinner is a treat and if I'm at a restaurant and pasta is the best sounding thing on the menu I'm going to order it!

And finally, if I really want ice cream, I'll stop and get some (usually kiddie size, though!)!

4.
Keeping My Eyes on the Prize

Finally, none of this would be possible without a big dose of motivation!

For me this motivation came largely from clothes (are you surprised?).  For close to a year and a half, I had a closet full of beautiful, but unwearable clothes.  I went from a size 6 to a 10 and felt defeated almost every time I looked in my closet.  I finally got to a point where enough was enough.  I wanted to regain possession of my closet, and also a lot of my confidence.  Fitting into smaller sizes has kept me going.  I'm proud to report that I can now fit in probably 99% of my clothes again and it feels great!

Yesterday was class picture day at school and I felt so triumphant when I was able to wear a favorite Lilly!

I used to laugh this quote off, but now, I'm all for it!

I still have 7 pounds to go to reach my goal of losing 25 pounds, but I'm not dreading it--I'm excited about what is to come!  My next steps are to continue what I've been doing and try to up my workouts a bit, as well as add more tone/definition to my arms and abs.

Wish me luck!

Resolutions Update and an April Fool!

Happy April my chickadees!

How was your Easter?

Those of you that follow me on Instagram, know I went to the country with Bryce for Easter with his grandmothers.  I always enjoy our weekend trips to the country and he has two adorable grannies so it was a nice weekend!

Being that today is April 1st and we are now a quarter of the way through 2013, I thought it would be a good to update you on my resolutions progress.

Part of the reason I shared my resolutions on the blog was to increase accountability, and so it would only be appropriate to report on my progress.

I'll quickly recap my resolutions in this post, but to read the full post on them, click here!

My first resolution was to blog more in 2013.  As a part of my resolution to blog more I decided to schedule a weekly blog time on Tuesday afternoons.  I figured adding it into my schedule each week would be a good way to ensure that I found the time to blog.  This weekly time has worked pretty well, however, March was a bit hectic so I wasn't able to get my Tuesday time in each week.  My goal was to post at least once a week, though, and I have stuck to that and even posted twice many weeks!  I have definitely enjoyed being back in the blog world and have enjoyed reconnecting with all of you!

Gripe Less:
SUCCESS
This resolution was mostly for Bryce.  He is so good to me.  I honestly don't think I would ever find someone to love and care for me  more than Bryce does.  With that being said, I sometimes am hard on him about little things and decided that I would try to do a better job of picking my battles in 2013 and letting things slide.  I'm still a bit of a control freak and am far from perfect, but I will say I have noticed our relationship has reached another level in the last few months and I'd like to think it's partly due to my conscious effort to be more grateful of him each day.

Get Fit...again!
MAJOR SUCCESS!!!
I have to toot my own horn on this resolution a bit.  I have really dedicated myself to getting healthy again and have seen major results.  Since the start of the year I have lost 18 pounds and am thrilled!  My biggest goal was to be able to fit back in all my clothes and it has been wonderful to rediscover my closet again!  My goal was to lose 25 pounds total, so I have 7 more to go.  I have changed my diet a lot, mostly cutting down on portion size, carbs, and sugars and have really noticed a difference in how I feel.  I have also started cycling again and make it to class 2-3 times a week.  A part of that resolution was also a workout tip jar.  Every time I work out I add $2 to the jar and was not supposed to buy any clothes until the jar reached $100.  Well, I have to admit, that I have not stuck to this completely.  I made it almost two months before caving and buying some clothes.  I have however cut way back on my shopping because of the jar and am still planning to treat myself to something when it reaches $100.  I'm not beating myself up over this though because the whole point of the jar was to motivate myself to get fit and I've found that motivation even without the pressure of the jar!  I also have been having so much fun "shopping" in my closet...so many clothes have been off-limits because of the weight I had gained so it has been so fun wearing many old favorites again!

I recently picked up these 3 favorite sundresses from my parents' house!
My two all time favorite Lilly dresses and a favorite Trina Turk...I couldn't fit into any of these last summer and can fit in all of them again!

My Easter outfit...I bought this dress last spring for Foxfield and it was a honestly a bit snug when I wore it, this year it's actually a bit loose and looks so much better on!

Try One New Food a Month
SUCCESS
I'm not sure if this one has actually worked out to one each month (don't think I tried anything in February), however I have tried more than 3 new foods which works out to more than one each month.  While we were in Chapel Hill I tried a grapefruit and red pepper salad (yuck!).  I recently tried sushi while out to dinner with Bryce one night (yuck!).  I re-tried beans in a white chicken chili (yum!).  And I tried brussel sprouts just last week (yum!).

Did you make any resolutions?

How's it going?

And finally, for April Fool's Day, I thought it would be fun to try and play a little trick on you with the game 2 Truths and a Lie.  I'm going to list 2 truths and 1 lie, and you have to try to guess which is the lie while I try and fool you!

  1. Bryce and I met during my 4th year at UVA.
  2. I am naturally a brunette.
  3. I was a psych major in college.
Okay...now go!  Which one is the April Fools trick?!?

Happy New Year!

Happy 2013 sweets!

Is it just me or does it feel like Halloween was just yesterday?  How has Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's passed already?  Each year time seems to go by even faster than the one before.  I am hoping to take advantage of every second of 2013 and hopefully enjoy time, even if it seems to be zipping by!

A few nights ago I couldn't sleep....my  mind was racing with New Year's Resolutions!   As I tossed and turned trying to sleep, I couldn't stop myself from reflecting on 2012 (a new job, new apartment, new friends, and more) and also thinking of what I could do to make 2013 even better.  I came up with 3 solid resolutions and am going to share them with you now, hoping that putting them in writing will also give me an added push to stick with them.  Please bear with me in this lengthy post!

NUMBER ONE:
BLOG MORE
I say it all the time:  I miss blogging!  I'm at the happiest point in my life- I enjoy teaching more than I ever could have imagined, each day I fall in love with Bryce a little bit more, I am surrounded by wonderful friends, I am having a blast living in the apartment- but in the process of all this LIVING, I seem to have lost time to blog.  I put nearly all my free time into family, friends, and Bryce and usually spend the little bit of extra time relaxing.  That being said, I miss the way blogging allows me to be creative, to share and learn with others, to connect with all of you.  I've realized I need to simply MAKE time to blog again.  The way I am going to achieve this resolution is by adding time to blog into my schedule! I have decided that Tuesdays will now be my blog day.  Tuesday afternoons will be reserved solely for Sundresses and Smiles.  I will write a post for the week and take time to read and comment on your blogs. This way, I will guarantee that I publish a post every Wednesday morning.  I hope to find more time than just this for blogging, but am also being realistic and working to ensure I post at least once a week!

NUMBER TWO:
GRIPE LESS
I tend to be a very bubbly, positive, glass half full kind of girl.  However, I've found that sometimes with Bryce I can be negative and too hard on him about little things.  When I think about all the jerks I dated before him (and all their crap that I put up with) I laugh at myself for the little things I nag Bryce about.  In 2013, I resolve to treat Bryce better and choose my battles.  I couldn't ask for a better boyfriend...he's there for me, even when I'm an emotional mess; he spoils me, even when I don't deserve it; and he truly loves me unconditionally.

Shells Bryce recently brought back to me from his recent hunting trip on the Eastern Shore...how could I nag someone so sweet and thoughtful?

NUMBER THREE:
GET FIT...again
In college, I worked out 4-5 times a week and was very active.  I was a bit of a cycle fanatic (see my tips for beginners here) and loved the energy and feeling I got from regular exercise.  Since college, I've had a harder time making exercise a part of my routine.  During the school week I have eighteen 5 year olds in my room starting at 7:20 am.  By the end of the days I'm exhausted and the thought of going to the gym is anything but tempting.  On the weekends, the thought of sleeping in, seeing a friend, shopping, relaxing with Bryce, reading....just about anything, seems better than lacing up my tennis shoes and exercising.  I know, however, that once I commit to regular exercise I will crave it- it will be enjoyable again and I will be happier, healthier, and more confident.  I've come to the point where enough is enough- I'm tired of fighting with my closet because nothing fits as well as it used to (or doesn't fit...period) and am ready to make a change!  In order to stick with this goal, I've added an additional catch.  I will pay myself to work out.  Each time, I workout I am going to put $2 in a jar...AND...I'm not allowed to buy any clothes until that jar contains $100!  Once I reach a hundred, I get to go out and buy something fun and new...and hopefully I will be quite happy to buy something that is in my old size again!

I want to look like this again!

And last, but not least, I have one addendum that Bryce suggested:
TRY ONE NEW FOOD A MONTH
Bryce has introduced me to a lot of new foods and is bound and determined to make me less picky.  Well my friends, when I was sharing my resolutions with him, he threw me this curve ball as a resolution and I agreed!  I never agreed I had to like the new foods though, haha!

I'm planning to share the progress of these resolutions at the end of each month to give myself some added accountability!

Did you make any New Year's resolutions?  What are they?

Have any tips for me?

Be back next Wednesday!

Have a great week!

Monument Avenue 10K

TGIF and a "Hoppy" Easter, my sweet friends!

Today I wanted to share a Richmond tradition with you:  The Monument Avenue 10K.

Monument Avenue is a National Historic Landmark District and is a gorgeous street filled with statues of Virginia Confederates (Robert E. Lee, J.E.B. Stuart, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson) as well as two other famous Richmonders, Matthew Fontaine Maury and Arthur Ashe.

This image I found on Pinterest is spot on!

Each year in the spring, the 10K is held to benefit VCU's Massey Cancer Center.  This year's event had more than 40,000 participants.  AMF (my best UVA friend) visited for the weekend and we walked it.  It was so fun participating in such a huge Richmond event.

we parked near Lee Monument and the street was already packed with runners!

Ready to Go!
AMF, ABE, SEG

the starting line!

The Avenue was filled with bands!

It was incredible how many people were out and walking!

There were some interesting costumes along the way...

I loved seeing homemade signs like these! The one with the pink balloon reads:
"Go Mommy! P.S. Peace love bananas"

I quickly snapped this picture of my all time favorite Monument Ave house to share with y'all!  I have ogled over this house since birth!

So many organizations were there to cheer people on--I got a kick out of The Richmond Parrothead Club!

Lee Monument

FINISHED!

We hope to make this an annual tradition...AMF even suggested jogging next year!  We'll see how that goes...

Does your hometown have any traditions like these?  Do you like participating in races?

As a side note, if you haven't checked out the Sundresses and Smiles Facebook page yet, try and stop by (and please like it)!  I just updated the "What I'm Reading..." album with three new books!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Racing High

Happy Thursday readers!  What a fabulous week it has been..not only has it flown by, but every day I am loving teaching and my students more!

Today, I bring you Student Teaching Guest Post #5 from Amanda, who happens to be my one of my best bloggy friends!  We text and talk on the phone frequently and it is so special to have her positive attitude in my life.  She is a big runner, and well....I am DEFINITELY....NOT!  So I thought it would be fun for her to share some of her motivation with not only me, but also with you!  Enjoy!

Hello Sundresses and Smiles followers, I'm Amanda! And I'm here today from Simple Girl, Simple Pleasures. I am so honored to be guest posting for my bloggy bff (yes, we have regular phone dates and still haven't met in real life...yet)!

Anyways, I'm here to talk about my love of running and what keeps me motivated. To say that I'm addicted to the runner's high is an understatement, but I have discovered a new version of the runner's high...it's the runner's racing high.

Rock 'N Roll Half Marathon
Providence, 2011

I used to go through phases where I loved running then hated it. It has always been a passion of mine, and it will always be a passion of mine. But after running a 5k several years ago, I realized the excitement of racing is worth the hard work, sweat, and pain. So I started to do training programs and run to work towards something.

Check out those leg muscles!!
(This caption is Allie speaking...)
During college, I knew I couldn't commit the time, effort, or heart to running and training for races. So after graduation, I decided it was time to get something in my calendar to keep me motivated, to keep me exercising, and to keep up my health. Bring on the Roxbury Half Marathon in Connecticut. For months, I ran long distances and worked my butt off. My goal was to run it under two hours.
Race day came, and when it barely broke twenty degrees, I knew my joints were going to hate me. I had to walk part of the race, and I cried through the finish line. I came in 85th out of the 91 participants. I didn't come in last, and I finished the race. I was officially a half marathoner.
I struggled to walk the following days, but I felt proud of what I had done. As hard as that race was, I knew that it wouldn't be my last. Since that race, I have run another half marathon and my first 10k. I am trying to only run a max of five races a year (this year, I'm running at least four).

VICTORY!

Running races (and training for them) keep me motivated and working hard, plus they keep me in shape. I love setting goals for myself, so each race is something new to look forward to or something else to accomplish. Do you have anything that keeps you motivated to workout or run?
Thanks again for having me, Allie!

Have a great day!
